Michael believes that economic development, regional cooperation, smart growth and strong neighborhoods are critical to Blacksburg’s future, and he will support projects that advance these efforts:
- Economic Development: He will work to create incentives for entrepreneurs, revitalize downtown, increase foot traffic at commercial centers and improve communication between local government and business.
- Regional Cooperation: He will work to ensure the success of the Old Blacksburg Middle School Master Plan, partner with the county on school issues, coordinate efforts to recruit business and offer area transportation choices.
- Smart Growth: He will work to encourage mixed-used development, promote public and alternative transportation, offer affordable housing and conserve green and open spaces. (Read Michael’s Oct. 13, 2009 letter to the Collegiate Times about smart growth in Blacksburg.)
- Strong Neighborhoods: He will work to protect the character and property values of our neighborhoods, find common-sense solutions to over-occupancy, provide recreational and athletic opportunities and connect college students and long-term residents as neighbors.
